All political leaders will escort President Nicos Anastasiades to Crans-Montana in Switzerland during the Cyprus talks as confirmed at the end of the National Council held this morning.
During today’s National Council, which lasted almost three hours, President Anastasiades informeed all political leaders of the latest developments on the Cyprus matter and requested that they escort him to the Swiss resort next week.
Exiting the Presidential Palace, the leader of centrist DIKO party Nikolas Papadopoulos mentioned that he has responded positively to President Anastasiades’ request. The same has been confirmed by the leader of the governing Democratic Rally (DYSI) Averof Neofytou who stated that “all party leaders have responded positively”.
The three center parties DIKO, EDEK and the Solidarity Movement have handed in a joined document, the content of which will be presented tomorrow.
The Conference on Cyprus will reconvene on June 28 at the political level, under the auspices of the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
In addition to President Anastasiades, the leaders of the political parties, and the Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci, the Conference will also see guarantors Greece, Turkey and the United Kingdom take part. However, the European Union will be present as an observer.
UN Special Advisor Espen Barth Eide, who has characterized this as a truly historic opportunity, is working on the drafting of a document which will be a guideline for the discussions on the security and guarantees chapter.
It is expected to incorporate each side’s respective position on the issue as outlined in Geneva and Mont Pelerin.
