APOEL have made a major leap to winning this year’s Cyprus championship with victory over AEL 2-0 at the GSP Stadium on Monday.
Two goals in both halves, one in first half stoppage time and the other in the beginning of the second was enough for the reigning champions to emerge victorious over AEL to open the gap at the top of the Cyprus Championship.
Pieros Sotiriou gave APOEL the lead with a first half stoppage time penalty to net his 18th goal of the season. Roger Canas doubled his teams advantage in the second to clinch victory for Tomas Christiansen’s side.
AEL who were a shadow of their good selves last week against Apollon couldnt keep up to the champions tempo and fell to another defeat which was there sixth of the season and their fourth defeat in their last six matches.
APOEL have extended their lead at the top to seven points in front of second place Apollon and AEL remain in fifth position two points behind fourth place Omonia a place which could ultimately lead to Europe next season.
